Information about Welfare Martyrs Monument
During World War II, four destroyers, four submarines, twelve landing craft and four squadrons of aircraft were brought to England by the Turkish state welfare ship, with 199 personnel on board consisting of officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and students. The ship sank and shortly thereafter, four naval officers, five air officers, 15 non-commissioned officers, five personnel and three personnel of the ship survived the disaster, and 167 people were killed. In order to commemorate this painful incident, which left traces and pain in the hearts of citizens, it was decided to erect this monument, the Martyrs of Well-being Monument, to remind the world of their heroism, courage and great sacrifices.
