It is the most famous street in the mega-town of Soweto in Johannesburg, where Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the two Nobel Prize winners, lived. In the early 1990s to commemorate the 1976 Soweto Uprising, the street is named after Dr. Benedicat Wallet Vilakazi, a poet, writer, and first black man to teach in Wits, at the University of the Witwatersrand. The street is also home to interactive artwork and a variety of antique stalls.
