Information about Hector Pieterson Memorial
Located in Soweto, Johannesburg, the Hector Peterson Museum pays tribute to the work of the country's black students in the uprising against apartheid. The museum is named after Hector Pieterson, 12, who was shot dead in a violent confrontation between police and students in Soweto on June 16, 1976. Initially a memorial was erected to Peterson and the other students who died or were injured on that fateful day on Kumalo Street in Soweto. ; And then in 2002 the government opened the museum next to the memorial. Visitors to the Hector Peterson Museum cannot help but be moved by the photos, historical documents, oral testimonies, and other displays that have been carefully selected to preserve the memory of the 1976 victims.
