Information about Upper Town
The old upper town of Bregenz (Oberstadt) occupies the site of the historic walled Roman city of Brigantium. It's a great area to explore on foot, with many streets retaining their old cosmopolitan character and charm, and in places where remnants of the 13th-century old city walls still stand. Highlights of the Upper Town include the Old Town Hall (Alte Rathaus), a half-timbered building from 1622; Deuringschlösschen a small palace built in 1698; Capuchin walled monastery and church from 1636 with St. Joseph's Church (added 18th century); and the splendid St. Gallus Parish Church, a simple 14th-century Gothic structure rebuilt in 1738 with its Baroque interior decoration.
