The Bordj de Cognanesi is one of the city's 14 surviving medieval towers. The tower dates back to the first half of the thirteenth century, and is one of the tallest towers in the city. It was mainly part of the first city wall. This tower is famous for the set of brick bells that line the upper side of the main facade of the tower. The tower is also distinguished by its interior designs, as it was equipped from the inside with luxurious decor inspired by the design of the royal palaces in the Italian Renaissance.
