One of the famous historic gates of San Gimignano being located in the historic center of the city and linking the main San Giovanni street with Piazza della Cisterna. It is a very old gate dating back to the tenth century AD. The gate takes the form of an exposed circular arch made of stone, topped by a covered balcony supported by a series of small hanging arches. Surrounding the gate are a group of ancient buildings, including historic towers and churches. There are many shops, restaurants and other service and recreational facilities in the Gate Square.
