This temple is considered the historical heart of Tainan, as it was the only Confucian temple in Taiwan and was the place where people had to go not only to receive education but to prepare for imperial examination, if they wished to become civil servants. Dating back to 1665 AD, the temple has gone through many different transformations and had to be rebuilt several times due to the turbulent nature of Taiwan’s political and colonial history. Although all the buildings we see today are more than 350 years old, the fact remains that this temple played a role essential in the history of Taiwan.
