Sri Mukteswarar Temple is located in the village of Athur, 5 km from the heart of Madurai, on the banks of the Palar River. It is one of the distinctive temples in that region, which gained wide fame because it contains a separate external shrine to Prakaram. The temple has a similar design to the rest of the temples of India, where the decorations, stone inscriptions, lively colors and wide squares where prayers, festivals and religious ceremonies are held.
