Information about Souda Bay War Cemetery
Souda Bay War Cemetery is a military cemetery operated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the Gulf of Soda Crete. It is the last resting place for the British Commonwealth war dead who lost their lives between May 20 and May 31, 1941, during the Battle of Crete. There you will find rows of white tombstones in immaculate lawns and decorated with a border of flowers. Small pomegranate trees (the fruit of the underworld) were placed among the flowers and shrubs along each row. At the sea boundary of the Souda Bay cemetery there are large bushes of rosemary (the herb of remembrance), all important symbols of the last resting place of the many who perished in the Battle of Crete.
