Information about Silves Cathedral
Silves Cathedral was built in the 13th century on the site of a former large Moorish mosque just below the castle, and although much of its building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, it has been completely reconstructed, and many believe its current building offers one of the best examples of architecture Gothic in the Algarve, and inside there are the tombs of bishops and local dignitaries, as well as the tombs of some of the Crusaders who fought here against the Moors throughout history.
