So far the most popular tourist attraction in Bari is the church that was built to house the relics of St. Nicholas. At first glance, the building will appear plain and massive, but a closer look will reveal distinct details in the carvings around its gates, where stone animals appear to guard the entrances. The large pilgrimage church began in 1087 and finished in 1197 and is one of the finest achievements of Roman architecture in the area.
