The 38-meter-high, five-domed stone cathedral was built by Bishop Vladimir of Novgorod between 1045 and 1050, replacing an oak cathedral also built by Bishop Joachim of Corsonian in the late 10th century. The building in which the church is located is the oldest building still in use today in Russia. The church was built in a beautiful Gothic architectural style, and it has a striking marble exterior.
