The Royal Tobacco Factory, which is the first tobacco factory established in Europe during the eighteenth century, was built. This building embodies one of the finest examples of industrial architecture in the Renaissance. It took the form of a fortified palace as a result of its design by military engineers. It was surrounded by a moat. Since the fifties of the twentieth century, it has been the seat of the University of Seville.
