Ristemaje is a region covered with crosses, the formation of which is associated with the expulsion of the Swedes from the Rigi in August 1781, when Empress Catherine II signed a document that allowed the Swedes to move to southern Ukraine; The place that was the home of the Swedes for at least 400-500 years is now empty. Initially Ristemaje was the place where people leaving the island went to make crosses, but nowadays visitors to the island are making crosses.
