Information about Placa de la Independencia Girona
A distinctive square with a neo-classical flair, many people flock to because of the many restaurants. The square was inaugurated in 1778 during the reign of King Carlos III, and was designed by Martí Soreda on the site of the old monastery in Sant Agustin. Also in the center is a monument to the defenders of Girona during the siege of 1808-1809, designed by the sculptor Barrera. This square is surrounded mainly by buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which were built during the period of Madrid's expansion.
