Information about Pharmacy Under the Eagle
When the Nazis established the Podgorje ghetto in 1941, Eagle Pharmacy found itself in the heart of the ghetto, and its Polish owner decided to stay, as only Poles were allowed to live and work in the ghetto. Over the course of two years, the pharmacy became an important center of social life, playing an important role in helping to obtain food, medicine, forged documents and avoiding deportation, and its employees risked their lives in several clandestine operations while witnessing the tragedy through the pharmacy windows, as the ghetto and its 15,000 residents were eventually "liquidated". Today the building is a branch of the Krakow Museum, reconstructed to look like it did during the Nazi occupation, which through traditional performances, multimedia and extensive testimonies from both Poles and Jews painfully describes life in the Krakow ghetto.
