Located in the Kalamaga district of Tallinn, the Batary Prison Gallery covers nearly four hectares of a former sea fortress located on the shore of Tallinn Bay. The Republic of Estonia, which declared its independence in 1918, rebuilt it as a prison after the First World War and it lasted until 2003. For Estonians, Batare is one of the most prominent symbols of Soviet and Nazi political terrorism, and is now a museum and gallery documenting and illustrating the history of the prison for visitors.
