Information about Omar Mosque
On this site, Omar Ibn Al-Khattab prayed in the Holy City after receiving the keys to Jerusalem from Patriarch Sophronius. It is narrated that Omar Ibn Al-Khattab realized the prayer while he was inside the Church of the Resurrection, so he was afraid that he would pray inside the church and the Muslims would come after him. They say here Omar prayed and they built a mosque, so he moved away from the church He prayed on the opposite side, and the mosque was built in the same place in 1193 AD during the reign of al-Afdal ibn Salah al-Din. It is now considered one of the religious and tourist destinations in the city of Jerusalem with 15 minarets and a classic Islamic architectural design.
