Information about Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum, located in the complex of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, Al Khuwair, opposite the Al Zawawi Mosque in Muscat. The museum contains marine and animal fossils and ancient mammals such as monkeys and primitive elephants, teeth and stuffed animals. It includes several wings and various sections, including what tells the marine natural history of the Sultanate Oman, including what tells the stories of wild creatures that lived in the Sultanate and the remains of stones, plants and fossilized creatures. These sections include natural treasures that vary between terrestrial and marine creatures and other natural landmarks, including the remains of fossilized coral found in the Wadi al-Sahtan region, and its age is estimated at more than 270 million years. The museum also includes remnants of minerals, fossilized trees and bones of creatures that lived in Oman. It contains detailed coverage of Omani flora and fauna, with displays of mammals, insects, birds and indigenous botanical gardens, and a highlight of the museum is the Whale Hall: it houses the large skeleton of a sperm whale that was washed up on the Omani coast in 1986.
