The beautiful and massive neoclassical building that houses the National Museum of Romanian History from 1894 to 1900 was built according to designs by local architect Alexandru Săvulescu, and originally served as the headquarters of the Romanian Postal Service until 1970 when the Museum of History moved in. Today the museum is home to some of Romania's greatest possessions, and what makes the place most worth visiting is the Roman treasury in the basement, which includes jewelry from the Ostrogothic period, as well as the current Roman Crown Jewels (the King's Crown and an impressive collection of emeralds made for Queen Mary, the king's wife).
