Information about Museum for Sepulchral Culture
Located in Kassel, this one-of-a-kind museum is dedicated to "the last things": central themes such as death, the last moments before the soul departs, mourning and remembrance. The focus is on cultural-historical and current phenomena in dealing with the finiteness of life. These include funeral and mourning rites, and objects, and also incorporate artistic views on life and death as well as traditions of other cultures on the subject of death. Exhibitions from other cities are also held here to showcase their culture of death, and regular themed exhibitions expand perspective to include aspects such as the depiction of corpses, mourning masks, grave meals, coffin design, or an examination of how death is treated as an element in music, film, dance or play. This museum is not recommended for the faint hearted.
