Information about Monastery of Sao Martinho de Tibaes
Located about 6 kilometers from Braga, the monastery of São Martino de Tebes was built on the site of a former Roman villa called "Teflanes", and was founded by Saint Martin of Dume in the sixth century during the reign of Sueve by Teodoro (Teodomiro), and in 1078, the knight Paio Guterres da Silva decided to rebuild the monastery, and later, in 1567, the monastery became the Portuguese and Brazilian headquarters of the Benedictine Order. In the 17th century, the current building was completed, and it became one of the most opulent in the country, with four galleries richly decorated according to the plans of Manuel Álvares, gilded sculptures, the Baroque decoration of André Soares, and the Baroque organ.
