The convent of Santa Maria de Salidas was founded in 1156, and construction began in 1168. In the late sixteenth and during the seventeenth century, the monastery experienced the first extensive renovations, and its medieval architecture was converted to the Baroque style. The Maltese Carlos Gimach is the building we see today, and was one of the monastery's most symbolic transformations.
