The Greek word Meteora means rocks suspended in the air in Arabic, and these six monasteries located at the top of a mountainside are an actual embodiment of that meaning. The monasteries are located on a very steep slope as if suspended from heaven. All these monasteries belong to the Eastern Orthodox Church. It is the second most important grouping of monasteries in Greece. Tourists and locals come here to delve into the splendor of these historic buildings, which were included in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage in 1988, and come to enjoy the majestic views of the neighboring Greek cities and mountains.
