Al-Marsa Al-Kabir is a town and port northwest of Algeria, located on the Mediterranean Sea at the western end of the Gulf of Oran. The Spaniards, the Portuguese and the Turks later disputed it until it fell under the control of France in 1830. It was developed in the period between 1939 and 1956 as a major French naval base.
