The Famine Monument was set up, with the aim of commemorating a painful memory in the history of the State of Kazakhstan, a historical event called the Great Famine that extended between the years 1931-1933, and nearly 1.7 million people died of starvation, which occurred as a result of political repression, and a statue of a woman named after her appears in the monument. The mother, a metaphor for the Kazakh people, holds her emaciated child dead from starvation in her arms, and on her face there are expressions of sadness and sorrow.
