The Lyman Museum Building is the oldest wooden building on the island, built in 1839. The museum tells the story of the Hawaiian Islands and its people through exhibits that revolve around a number of island-specific topics such as the origins of the volcanoes in Hawaii, the flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world, and the culture of the islands. Hawaiians, and other ethnic groups that made up the unique community in Hawaii today. In addition, the museum displays international collections of seashells and minerals.
