The historic Liwa Oasis is located on the northern edge of the Empty Quarter desert, which forms the largest sand mass in the world, and benefits from a water level located close to the surface. This has supported agriculture and animal husbandry in the oasis for generations and created a dramatic contrast between the green palm groves and the towering red sand dunes throughout around. Liwa Oasis stretches in an east-west arc for more than 100 kilometers and features some of the largest sand dunes in the world, many of which rise to over 150 metres.
