The Johannesburg Zoo is one of the most popular local and tourist attractions in the scenic northern suburb of Johannesburg. The zoo was established in 1904 when the land was donated by the Hermann Eckstein Company. The zoo houses more than 320 species of animals, including the rare African white lions. Gorillas, black rhinos and rare mongoose are internationally accredited and highly respected for their animal husbandry practices to maintain a high level of animal welfare, nutrition and ethical behaviour, ensuring the physical and psychological integrity of all their animals.
