In Greek mythology, during the Trojan War, the area on Lake Iznik was under the control of the Phrygians who sent troops to aid King Priam led by the brothers Phorcys and Ascanius. The lake was declared an Important Birding Area in 1989 for waterfowl species that are now threatened by pollution, and the lake has been developed as a recreational center.
