The Church of San Francisco, a historically and artistically important church, founded by the Italian Catholic monk Francis of Assisi, dates back to the late sixteenth century, and was built in 1593, and was designed by Antonio Ulan. The church was the site of the massive funeral held for Venezuelan liberation hero Simon Bolivar in 1842, and remains a beautiful example of colonial architecture. It is visited by locals and tourists from all over the world.
