Information about Heroes' Gate
The Heroes Gate in Szeged is a World War I memorial that commemorates the 12,000 Szeged soldiers who died in the war. It was built between 1936 and 1937 according to a design by Móric Pogány. There are more independent pieces of art around the gate. For example, there are large statues of soldiers on either side of the arched gate called the Monument to the Living and Dead Soldiers. The “Dead Soldier” statue is on the left while the “Living Soldier” statue stands on the right. These statues were created by Éva Lőte ) in 1937.
