Information about Haram al-Rama
The sanctuary of al-Rama is located about 3 kilometers north of Hebron on the old main road known today as al-Rama Street. The Bible describes the sanctuary of al-Rama as the abode of Abraham, in which he settled after his separation from his nephew Lot. The ruins at the site include a sanctuary built by Herod the Great in the first century AD. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, and in the fourth century AD, the building was replaced by a cathedral that was noted on the Madaba mosaic map, and was later destroyed in the year 638 AD, and the archaeologist Mader discovered some antiquities dating back to the Crusader era during his excavations. In the period between 1926 and 1928, the site was abandoned until the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities restored it and reopened it to the public.
