Sultan Selim I, the Ottoman conqueror of Syria and Egypt (known as Yavuz), built the Gulbahar Hatun Mosque in the southwest of the bazaar in 1514 AD, in honor of his mother, Gulbahar Hatun. The mosque was distinguished by a distinctive design, in which it relied on the use of black and white stone in a beautiful and unique harmony. The courtyard of the mosque includes a tea garden and a newly reconstructed wooden store. The mosque is one of the distinctive religious monuments of Mersin.
