Built in 1491, the Galata Khan for the Mevleviks or the Mevlevi Tekke was the first Mevlevi home in Istanbul. The khan ceased operating as a dervish lodge in 1925, and opened as a museum in 1975. The building underwent a major renovation between 2005 and 2009 and now serves as a museum dedicated to the Mevlanite Sufi Islamic sect. One of the most important landmarks in Istanbul is the Galata Khan Museum, which provides an insight into Turkey that you won't find anywhere else, by providing information on Mevlevi culture, music, and traditions, so it's worth including in any city tour.
