The construction of the castle of São Tiago began in 1614, and its purpose was to defend the city of Funchal from attacks by pirates and enemies. The royal chief architect, Jerónimo Jorge, was responsible for the construction work. Years later, the construction was completed by his son, Bartolomeo João ( Bartolomeu João), where the first phase of construction was completed in the mid-17th century and the second phase in the mid-18th century. Over the years, the castle has been used for various purposes, including housing British troops, military police and the Funchal Lancers at various times, as well as the victims of the massive floods that occurred on the island in 1803.
