The city and university library in Osijek is the Osijek City Library and the Central Library of the University of Osijek. It is the largest library in Slavonia and one of the largest in Croatia. The City and University Library in Osijek was established as the Osijek City Library on February 8, 1949, by a decision of the National City Committee of the City of Osijek. In 1957 the library was moved to the former home of Gillming-Hengl, on European Avenue, where the library is today. In 1975 the University of Osijek was created, the founder of which was the city library, so it expanded its activities and took over the functions of the university library, so it changed its name to the city and university library in Osijek, which it still holds.
