Information about Celsus Library

The Library of Celsus is one of the most beautiful structures in Ephesus. It was built in 117 AD and was a huge tomb of Gaius Julius Celsus Polymaenos; Governor of the Province of Asia, by his son Galius Julius Aquila, whose tomb was below the ground floor, and on which stood a statue of Athena; Goddess of wisdom, the Library of Celsus is perhaps the most distinctive building in the area, with a two-storey facade, and within it one large room located above the vaulted sub-structure, and the building was surrounded by an additional wall, providing adequate protection from moisture.
