Information about Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption
The Cathedral of Our Lady, also called the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba, was built as the first church in Santiago in 1514. At the beginning of the Spanish colonization of Cuba, it was dedicated to St. Catherine. This church was a primitive chapel on a hill and is the future site of the county jail. Its construction was completed in 1526, but it was destroyed in the earthquakes of 1678, 1766, 1852 and 1932. In 1882 the church was awarded the title of a small cathedral of the Holy See and then became a national monument of Cuba in 1958.
