Information about catacombs of Sousse
Dawamis Sousse is an underground cemetery catacombs that were established at the end of the first century by Christians to bury their dead during periods of persecution. Dawamis Sousse consists of galleries extending over 5 km and containing more than 15,000 tombs. These tombs were excavated in the walls of the galleries On two or three levels, the visitor notes the presence of niches at fairly regular intervals along the wall, and there are oil lamps in the galleries whose dim light is used to illuminate the basements. The catacombs were not only used as a secret cemetery, but also as a place of worship and a haven for Christian believers until the end of the fourth century. They also contained many sacred artifacts that are now displayed in the Sousse Museum.
