Information about Castello Barbarossa
An ancient castle dating from the late 9th century, the building was originally owned by the Swedish psychiatrist Axel Monti, who later donated it to his foundation. The castle was built of local stone, and consisted of vaulted ceilings and tiled floors. The castle derives its name in relation to the Ottoman admiral Haider al-Din, nicknamed "Barbarossa", who stormed it in 1535 and destroyed it in 1544. It is surrounded by a group of historical monuments and archaeological remains, including a small church. The castle is located in a beautiful nature area on the island, which is home to large numbers of migratory birds.
