Calshot Castle was built as a coastal artillery fortress by order of King Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540 with the purpose of providing protection from French and Roman invasions and to defend the entrance to the waters of the city of Southampton. For picnics, a café and shop sells information books and souvenirs.
