Established in 1965, the Brunei Museum houses an exhibition of Islamic art and exhibits depicting Brunei's role in the history of Southeast Asia from the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese in the sixteenth century to the modern era, in addition to a natural history exhibition, the oldest pieces in it being ceramics from Iran and Central Asia and blown glass. From Egypt and the Levant dating back to the ninth and tenth centuries, in addition to manuscripts of the Qur’an, small matchbox-sized Qur’ans, and gold jewelry.
