Information about Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)
The Temple of the Big Buddha sits majestically on a small rocky island off the northeast corner of Koh Samui. The 12-meter-tall golden Buddha statue was erected in 1972 and is known locally as Wat Phra Yai, and remains one of the island's most popular attractions. The Big Buddha Temple is located in Koh Van, on a bridge road that leads to the main island. The Big Buddha can be seen from a distance of several kilometers, and is often the first notable landmark you can see when you arrive in Samui by air. The Big Buddha is seated in a mara position, with the left palm resting on the lap and the right hand facing down. This statue reflects Buddha's path to enlightenment, and depicts how he succeeded in subduing the temptations and dangers imposed on him by Satan, by passing through meditation and calmness. Where it constitutes for us an image and a symbol of steadfastness, purity and enlightenment. Around the base of the tall statue is a courtyard and a vending area where amulets, religious artefacts, clothing and souvenirs are sold. There are also food stalls and small restaurants, and a staircase with an amazing dragon design leads to the area where the Buddha sits.
