To the south of Innsbruck rises the 746-meter-long hill known as Bergisel, famous worldwide for its great winter sports. It was built in 2003, which offers great views of the city. Long before the Olympics, the hill was the site of heroic battles in 1809 when the Trillion peasants liberated their capital from occupying French and Bavarian forces. On the north side of the hill, below the ski jump, stands the monument to those who fought for their freedom, including the Andreas Hofer monument built in 1893.
