Information about Bergama
Bergama is a historic town in western Turkey 50 miles north of Izmir, and is an archaeological treasure that includes many ruins that still stand today. The modern city is located on top of the remains of a Roman city, while the remains of an ancient Greek city lie northeast of the Bergama River, on a high hill with stepped slopes, and Greek ruins are also located in the western suburbs. The Archaeological Museum in the city contains a large collection of artifacts from the region, ranging in age from the Paleolithic to the Byzantine era. Cotton and leather industries are spread throughout the city, and in the surrounding area there is the cultivation of cotton, tobacco and vineyards.
