Information about Beckford's Tower and Museum
Henry Goodridge built the elegant neoclassical tower atop Lansdowne Hill in 1827 as a haven for the illustrious writer William Pickford. Born to great wealth and endowed with an early talent, Pickford created impressive buildings to store his exceptional art collections, furniture and books, and today the tower houses a museum dedicated to Pickford. The museum features a beautiful spiral staircase and extends to the Belvedere Building with its stunning ornate lantern providing stunning views of Bath and the surrounding countryside. At the foot of the tower is the Victorian cemetery that was once part of Bickford Amusement Park where he is buried.
