The Basilica of Saint John was built in the sixth century under Emperor Justinian I and his wife Theodora on the supposed site of the tomb of Saint John, who is believed to have come to Ephesus with the Virgin Mary. Over time, earthquakes and attackers destroyed this great basilica, which was the second largest church in Anatolia at the time. Its impressive ruins can still be seen today, and information panels distributed throughout highlight the scale model of the original building with its marble tiles and massive gate.
