Ban Josip Jelačić Square, also known as Ban Jelačić Square, is a historical square that has long been the center of public life in Zagreb, named after Count Josip Jelačić, who was off-limits to Croatia between 1848 and 1859. The square is lined with dozens of inspiring historic buildings that reflect a wide range of architectural styles, including modernism, classicism and detachment, and their elaborate facades provide a great setting for a cup of coffee at one of the many sidewalk cafés, and the square is usually crowded with locals, tourists, and florists.
