The picturesque Babur Mountains are located in the north of Algeria. It was officially declared a nature reserve in 1985, with the aim of protecting the few remaining Algerian forests in the northern parts of the country. It is characterized by dense pine forests and unique Mediterranean forests. It is also home to the endangered Barbary macaques; It is one of the rare major species of the ancient world, and its other wildlife includes the elusive Atlas deer.
